The Arts Society’s Lecturing Academy


This year The Arts Society celebrates fifty years of delivering the highest quality lectures available in the art world. We are keen to share our wealth of skills and knowledge with young people who want to learn how to talk about the arts in a way that engages even the most discerning of audiences. In August 2018 The Arts Society is running its second Lecturing Academy – a fully funded five-day residential training course offering opportunities to develop and practise presentation skills. We would particularly welcome applications from arts practitioners who would like to communicate their passion to others.

The course is fully residential and will take place at the Woodbrooke Conference Centre in Birmingham ( with visits to the Barber Institute of Fine Arts at Birmingham University (

When: Sunday 12th August – Thursday 16th August 2018

What’s covered: confident​ speaking training, presentation skills training including information on software and sourcing and using illustrative images, learning how to talk about art, accommodation, all meals, transport to all venues, ongoing opportunities to lecture with The Arts Society following completion of the course. Participants will just be asked to cover their travel costs to and from Birmingham.

Sunday 12th August
Evening: Welcome dinner including an introduction to The Arts Society and the programme, including information pack. Getting to know one another.

Monday 13th August
Day: Introduction to the course and short pre-prepared presentations.
Organising your material. How to put a presentation together. Deciding on a presentation topic for Thursday, start research.
Evening: Walking tour of Bournville (optional)

Tuesday 14th August
Day: Visual presentation skills and experience as a freelance art historian given by an accredited lecturer from The Arts Society. Individual support and tutorial time.
Evening: preparing the graduation presentation


Wednesday 15th August
Using your body and voice to get you message over. A day of practical experiences in the physical aspects of presenting.
Evening: preparing the graduation presentation


Thursday 16th August
Day: 10 minute presentations ‘graduation’ in front of an invited audience, coffee & networking, feedback from audience for the participants. Individual feedback from course tutors.
Lunch and then depart.
